I spent the last 15 years traveling back and forth to Rio de Janeiro. I fell in love with Rio because it's the city of Samba, and Samba for me is the essence of life. It's drumming, it’s sensuality, it's music, rhythm, movement, femininity. And the very first time that I heard the Brazilian batucada drums, I felt like my whole body was just alive and on fire. I felt like I needed to move and that I could express myself through this dance, in this movement.

So I arrived in Rio, I couldn't speak any Portuguese, I didn't know anyone there and I just went in search of Samba schools and teachers. I've spent the last 15 years going back and forth, learning the language, training with the Queens of the Carnival; really trying to understand how a Brazilian moves. Then transferring that movement into my body, because my body is quite different. And I find with my students everyone has a different body shape, everyone has different dance experience, if any.

People have different levels of fitness, so it's really wonderful to have that technique of teaching that I can transfer my knowledge, my experience and my passion for Samba across to my students and really see them blossom and transform. Samba is this beautiful dance style that is perfect for any woman, because it helps her to connect with her body. It helps her to connect with her femininity, and it really makes you feel proud and confident of being a woman. I think for me that's why I love teaching so much because I can inspire students to really discover who they are and to love themselves for who they are.
